Location: Lowell General Hospital - 295 Varnum Avenue, Lowell, MA

Hours: 36 hours, overnight shifts

Job Overview

This position is responsible for providing respiratory care to patients of all ages diagnosed with cardiopulmonary dysfunction. Responsibilities include setting up equipment for administering medicinal gases and aerosolized drugs, administering various respiratory therapies including oxygen delivery, mechanical ventilation, diagnostic procedures, and troubleshooting respiratory equipment. The therapist works cooperatively within the department and other services to ensure quality healthcare.

Minimum Qualifications

• Associate's degree from an accredited Respiratory Care program
• Licensed by the state of Massachusetts to provide respiratory care
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT)
• One (1) year of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Duties and Responsibilities

The following list describes the general nature of work and is not exhaustive; other duties may be assigned:

1. Initiate invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, monitor and maintain ventilator function per physician orders.
2. Follow infection control guidelines for equipment, adjust ventilator parameters based on assessments and blood gas analysis.
3. Wean patients from mechanical ventilation and other therapies through patient assessment and protocol adjustments.
4. Administer inhaled medications according to institutional guidelines.
5. Administer oxygen using various circuits.
6. Explain procedures to patients and families, embodying patient-centered care.
7. Analyze blood specimens for gases, glucose, and electrolytes in ICU settings.
8. Administer positive pressure therapies like CPAP or BiPAP.
9. Assist in transporting patients requiring life support.
10. Provide in-house transport of high-risk patients.
11. Administer non-traditional therapies such as Nitric Oxide gas.
12. Support high-risk deliveries with resuscitation services.
13. Monitor therapy effectiveness using non-invasive and invasive techniques.
14. Calibrate and maintain monitors and devices.
15. Assist in CPR, airway management, and medication administration during emergencies.
16. Document all therapy, assessments, interventions, and test results accurately.
17. Complete detailed shift notes for all patients cared for during the shift.
18. Ensure proper assembly of respiratory equipment before and during use.
19. Participate in daily rounds and assist with billing for services rendered.
20. Assist in developing in-service programs and orienting new staff and students.
