Job Summary
Functions as a member of the critical care transport team, responsible for the care of ill and injured patients transported by Med Center Air (MCA). Provides patient care including respiratory assessment, stabilization, and intervention, promoting safety and efficiency of MCA operations. Performs under supervision of the Medical Control Physician via radio contact or direct consultation.

Essential Functions
• Collects pertinent data related to the healthcare consumer’s health or situation.
• Uses clinical reasoning and skills to conduct assessments and perform patient care interventions to ensure optimal care, safety, and recovery.
• Delegates care elements to appropriate healthcare workers.
• Utilizes resources to provide safe, effective, and responsible services.
• Participates in committees, shared governance, or facility decision-making activities.
• Practices in an environmentally safe and healthy manner.
• Maintains operational knowledge for transportation modes including ambulances, helicopters, and airplanes.
• Initiates advanced practice procedures to improve patient outcomes such as drug-assisted intubation, video laryngoscopy, needle chest decompression, chest tube insertion, central line placement, intraosseous placement, transvenous/transcutaneous pacing, needle cricothyroidotomy, surgical cricothyroidotomy, and pharmacological titration.
• Initiates intubation and manages ventilation equipment and airway support.
• Transports and monitors patients requiring ECMO, Medical Circulatory Devices, intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation, pacing, ventriculostomy, and Point of Care diagnostics.

Physical Requirements
Requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. Must weigh less than 240 pounds and maintain weight to remain on flying status. Must have intact senses and good motor coordination. Requires good hygiene and conduct. Must speak English clearly. Work conditions include exposure to extreme weather, confined spaces, and biohazards. Must have good stamina and endurance. Maintain fitness standards per Policy 2.210.

Education, Experience, and Certifications
Graduate from an accredited respiratory care program. Current RT license or temporary license as a registered petitioner. RRT required; BSRT preferred. BLS required. Three years of clinical respiratory care in Emergency or ICU settings. Proficiency in advanced procedures bi-annually. Paramedic certification within 2 years of hire, with ongoing maintenance. Certifications include Trauma, ACLS, PALS, NRP, S.T.A.B.L.E. upon completion of orientation. Advanced certifications like Adult Critical Care (ACCS) or approved equivalents are required for position maintenance. Aviation training and flight crew certification per FAA Part 135 are mandatory, including Night Vision Goggles. Valid driver’s license, insurable by Atrium Health, and operational smartphone required. Annual compliance education in relevant areas is mandatory.
