Services for the UnderServed is hiring a Residential Specialist for our men’s shelter in Brooklyn, NY. This on-site role focuses on maintaining a safe environment, enforcing house rules, and supporting residents with crisis intervention, documentation, and program participation.

You will conduct rounds, assist with admissions, coordinate meals, and collaborate with supervisors, case managers, and staff to ensure quality care and adherence to policies.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or GED with 3+ years’ social service experience.
  • F02 certification and Security license mandatory.
  • Trauma-informed, client-centered approach with anti-oppressive lens.
  • Use neutral, non-judgmental language with residents.
  • Flexibility with schedule; maintain professionalism in crises.
  • Experience with homelessness, substance misuse, harm reduction, and disenfranchised groups including LGBTQ, HIV/AIDS, elderly, and those with mental health needs.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular rounds to ensure safety and residents’ wellbeing.
  • Enter activity logs and shift notes timely and accurately.
  • Assist with admissions paperwork.
  • Escort residents to services and housing referrals.
  • Meet with supervisors and participate in staff training.
  • Plan and conduct self-care activities and Resident Support groups.
  • Collaborate with case managers on tasks and orientation to the program.
  • Provide administrative support for reception and clerical duties.
  • Follow emergency procedures and fire drills; attend agency meetings.
  • Coordinate meals and assist in meal planning.

Position Overview

S:US is seeking a Residential Specialist for their men's shelter in Brooklyn.

This position is located at Ralph Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11233

The Residential Specialist staff member will be responsible for ensuring a safe environment and that tenants are adhering to House Rules and program policies, monitoring surveillance systems, and acting as a role model to tenants and encourage program participation. In this role you will provide necessary support to residents for a variety of issues, make hourly observation rounds and document in the communication log, communicate incidents to supervisory staff via written incident reports and communication log, and attend staff meetings. You will also provide frontline crisis intervention, answer phones and route calls as needed, ensure reception area is tidy, and perform other duties as requested by supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct regular scheduled rounds to ensure safety and residents wellbeing
  • Enter activity log information and shift notes in a timely fashion and accurate manner.
  • Complete necessary admissions paperwork
  • Assist in escorting residents to services and activities outside of the facility, such as clinics, income maintenance centers and housing referral
  • Meet with Shift Supervisor for individual and group supervision
  • Planning, implementing and/or researching self-care and other social activities for residents conduct Resident Support groups
  • Meet with case managers on regular basis to assist in assigned tasks
  • Provide initial orientation to program
  • Provide administrative support in areas of office coverage, telephone and clerical work, food services
  • Understand and follow emergency procedures, including fire drills
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Shift Supervisor and Program Director
  • Attend job related trainings and agency meetings as necessary
  • Provide meal coordination
Qualifications
  • Associate Degree in Human Services or High Diploma or GED with 3+ years’ social service experience
  • F02 certification, and Security license is mandatory but may be obtained within 6 months if hired.
  • Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti -oppressive lens into your work with the people we serve.
  • Use neutral and non- judgmental language when responding to the needs and requests of the residents
  • Must have ability to be flexible with schedule as needed
  • Ability to maintain professional maturity during crisis situation
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and experience with and/or knowledge of homelessness, substance misuse and harm reduction, working with the disenfranchised communities including
  • whom identify LGBQT, HIV/AIDs affected, the elderly and individuals with mental health and developmental disabilities.
Referred Qualifications & Skills
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency with computer-based programs, typing skills
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs.
