Job summary

Houston Area Women's Center is seeking a Residential Mentor to oversee safety, welfare, and day-to-day needs of women and children in the domestic violence shelter. You will provide peer counseling, education, and mentoring to help clients acclimate to communal living.

This full-time, on-site role requires a degree (associate or bachelor) and experience in social services, plus proficiency in Microsoft Office and a valid Texas driver's license.

Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in relevant fields with experience in social services.
  • Experience in case management or shelter settings is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams).
  • Valid Texas Driver's License with clean driving record is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mentoring, crisis intervention and safety planning for residents.
  • Facilitate mediation and conflict resolution among residents.
  • Monitor residents’ personal responsibilities in communal living.
  • Conduct orientations, intakes and group meetings; assist with exits.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and grant requirements; document services.
  • Coordinate with agency departments to resolve client needs.
  • Maintain resident files and timely data entry in databases.
  • Keep living areas safe and report incidents; report abuse to authorities.

Education

Associates Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Public Health, or Criminal Justice
Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Public Health, or Criminal Justice
Experience within social services
Proficient knowledge with Microsoft Office

As the Residential Mentor, you will oversee the safety, general welfare, and day-to-day needs of the women and children staying in the domestic violence shelter. You will help clients acclimate to a communal living environment by providing peer counseling/support, education, and mentoring.

Your Schedule:
  • Sunday-Thursday 3:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m.
  • Full-time
  • Work Model: 100% onsite

Local Travel: 25%

  • Hourly Compensation: $21.63

  • 401(k) Retirement Plan with a 125% employer match on employee contributions up to 4% of annual earnings for eligible full-time employees after one year of service
Qualifications
The Requirements We are Seeking:
  • Associates Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Public Health, or Criminal Justice and 3 years of experience within social services, case management or similar field.
  • OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Public Health, or Criminal Justice and 1 year of experience within social services, case management or similar field.
  • Experience within social services, case management, or similar field.
  • Proficient knowledge with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams)
  • Valid Texas Driver's License with a good driving record; ability to travel to off-site locations utilizing personal transportation
What you Deliver in this role:
  • You work directly and interact with clients and their families in a domestic violence shelter by providing mentoring, crisis intervention, safety planning, and supportive services on a frequent basis.
  • You facilitate provide mediation between residents when needed by modeling and teaching non-violent conflict resolution skills.
  • You assign and monitor residents’ personal responsibilities in the communal living environment.
  • You conduct individual orientations, intakes, group house meetings, exit processes etc.
  • You enforce residential policies to ensure compliance with grantors and funding sources.
  • You attend Case Meetings for feedback and information and to develop working plans to address client issues. Communicate with other departments of the agency to resolve client needs.
  • You create resident files and record client services by existing deadlines via database.
  • You maintain safety and cleanliness of communal living areas at all times and report unsafe activities, complete incident reports for accidents, hazardous practices.
  • You report abuse/neglect to either Child and/or Adult Protective Services.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
