Job summary

University of California San Diego (UCSD) Department of Psychiatry is seeking an Animal Models of Addiction Laboratory Assistant II to assist the PI with mouse models of substance use disorders. You will help maintain lab operations, data collection, and analyses, under supervision.

The role requires wet lab capabilities, mouse handling, and familiarity with molecular biology techniques, tissue processing, and behavioral assays. Some evenings/weekends may be required; 100% effort on campus.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or a GED and two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including science courses and one year of laboratory experience.
• Experience with basic and general techniques in molecular biology.
• Experience in general laboratory techniques.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and collaboratively with others; maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to measure, weigh, and mix chemicals.
• Experience with standard molecular biology techniques including tissue culture and Western blotting.
• Ability to prepare solutions, operate analytical balances and perform accurate calculations.
• Knowledge of library usage to locate journals and copy articles for research.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills; order and maintain lab equipment and supplies.
• Familiarity with lab safety precautions and MSDSs.
• Experience with computer software (Access, MS Word, Excel) and learning new software.
• Experience with mouse handling.

Responsibilities

• Assist the PI with multiple research projects on mouse models of substance use disorders.
• Maintain lab in good order, including safety and administrative duties.
• Perform limited wet lab procedures under PI direction (mouse colony management, genotyping, tissue processing).
• Operate video-assisted, behavioral, and microscopy equipment.
• Assist with data collection, analyses, and interpretation of results; collaborate with lab members.
• Maintain detailed records and communicate with supervisor about experiments.
