Duties and Responsibilities

The Burclaff Lab focuses on understanding how metabolism and cellular energetics are regulated within intestinal stem cells, and how this dynamic regulation supports homeostasis, identity maintenance, fate decisions, cell cycle regulation, and tissue plasticity following injury or disease. We utilize a mix of animal models and cutting-edge, genetically modified, primary human intestinal stem cell cultures to advance our understanding of the mammalian intestine.

The Research Associate will advance research operations, understand project rationales, and execute experiments to test scientific hypotheses across mouse models, cell lines, and primary cell cultures. In this role, you will also assist with laboratory management, including inventory tracking, equipment oversight, and day-to-day operational organization.

  • Primary Cell Culture Management: Establish, propagate, and maintain mammalian primary cell cultures and established cell lines using aseptic techniques to support research projects.
  • Molecular & Biochemical Assays: Perform routine and advanced molecular biology and biochemical assays, including DNA/RNA protein extraction, PCR, RT-qPCR, gel electrophoresis, tissue sectioning, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry staining, and live image analysis.
  • Animal Model Care & In Vivo Research: Oversee mouse colony operations-including handling, breeding, weaning, genotyping, and tissue collection-and execute experimental procedures in accordance with institutional guidelines.
  • Laboratory Operations & Instrumentation: Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, manage inventory and data logs, and ensure strict compliance with safety protocols and standard operating procedures.

If you are a collaborative scientist who enjoys hands-on research, solving problems, and keeping complex laboratory operations running smoothly, we encourage you to apply.

Other Responsibilities

Additional duties include organizing and maintaining research data, drafting or editing documents, contributing to publications, grant applications, and presentations.

Qualifications

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor's degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience. May require terminal degree and licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • Experience in mammalian primary cell culture (establishment and maintenance)
  • Experience in molecular biology and biochemistry techniques (PCR; RT-qPCR; gel electrophoresis, DNA, RNA, and protein extraction; immunofluorescence; immunohistochemistry)
  • Experience in mouse colony management (animal handling, breeding, weaning, genotyping, etc) and in vivo experimentation
  • Prior research experience.
  • Ability to work with animals.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to use highly specialized laboratory equipment with troubleshooting abilities.
