Job summary

North Carolina A&T State University is seeking a research-focused chemist to support and design activities for multiple projects within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

The role involves formulating sample prep and analysis methods, improving quality, and recommending solutions while reporting to the Analytical Services Laboratory Director.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry or related field (preferred).
  • Strong analytical skills using HPLC with QDa, FLR, UV, RI detectors.
  • Experience in sample extraction, standard prep, and chromatographic analysis.
  • Proficiency with Waters Acquity UPLC and Empower 3 software; detectors as noted.
  • Experience running and minor maintenance of instrumentation.

Job description

Position Overview

This position will support, design, develop and execute research activities for primary and secondary research projects within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. The successful candidate will formulate research methods for sample preparation and analysis, suggest options for improving quality, and recommend solutions. The position reports directly to the Analytical Services Laboratory Director.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop and execute research activities for primary or secondary research projects.
  • Formulate research methods for sample preparation and analysis.
  • Suggest options for improving quality and recommend solutions.
  • Perform sample extraction and standard preparation required for chromatographic analysis.
  • Plan and design specific quality control measures and procedures as part of research protocol.
  • Gather information to prepare budgets and propose estimates for acquisition of supplies and equipment.
  • Co‑author manuscripts and serve as primary presenter within department or at professional conferences.
  • Collaborate with others to adapt experimental design based on data or literature review.
  • Provide customer service orientation and excellent interpersonal skills.
Qualifications
  • Earned Master’s degree in Chemistry (preferred) or a discipline related to the area of assignment.
  • Strong analytical skills using HPLC with QDa, FLR, UV and RI detectors.
  • Experience in sample extraction, standard preparation, and chromatographic analysis.
  • Proficiency with Waters Acquity UPLC with Empower 3 software and QDa, FLR, UV, and RI detectors.
  • Experience running and conducting minor maintenance on instrumentation.
  • PhD or Master’s degree with at least 5 years of laboratory chemistry and/or instrumentation experience.
  • Competence in sample preparation using SPE, EDGE for liquid and gas chromatography.
  • Critical thinking, judgment, decision‑making, literature search, and experimental design skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
