Position Overview

The primary purpose of this position is to serve patients by providing medical laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic information. Performs routine laboratory test procedures on human body fluid and tissue to provide accurate data to the healthcare team. Adheres to quality assurance and control procedures, makes decisions about test results, instrument operation, specimen suitability, and uses sound clinical judgment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain laboratory productivity by monitoring workload, identifying peak and slack periods, and making operational or staffing adjustments.
  • Implement new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives, preparing proposals, performing parallel testing, and monitoring progress.
  • Comply with state and professional continuing education licensing requirements by providing in‑service program and monitoring outcomes.
  • Bill services by completing request for service, monitoring billed items, and providing service codes to billing office.
  • Perform standardized hematologic and chemistry tests on body fluids.
  • Perform complete blood counts using ABX Micros 60 and finger‑sticks on students to analyze blood for glucose and cholesterol.
  • Calculate and interpret various statistical procedures and initiate corrective actions.
  • Perform QC and culture procedures for Strep A, Chlamydia, Bayer glucose, Accoutered glucose, cholesterol, Oxidase droppers, gram stains, gonorrhea cultures, and related assays.
  • Read wet preparations, perform gram stains, KOH preps, and phlebotomy.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment performance, troubleshoot, certify instrument performance, and arrange service and repair.
  • Maintain supplies inventory and quality results through QAP, proficiency surveys, QC programs, and generate reports.
  • Participate in API testing program, QC programs, accreditation standards, and monthly QC procedures.
  • Maintain medical laboratory information system, recommend improvements, write manuals, and train employees.
  • Schedule employees, evaluate proficiency of new hires, and train ancillary personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory policies, HIPAA, universal precautions, and chemical hygiene plan.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalence and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require compliance with current CLIA regulations.
  • Graduation from an accredited MLT/MT/MLS program and passing a national exam given by the Board of Registry of the American Society for Clinical Pathologists or other equivalent agencies.
  • Prefer at least one year of experience working in a clinical laboratory.
  • Basic laboratory and communication principles acquired through MLT/MT programs and work experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or a biological science; or equivalent training.
  • Licensure or certification as a medical technologist or public health microbiologist approved by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists.
  • Knowledge of CLIA regulations and public health laboratory laws.
Remote or Hybrid Work

This position may be eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies. N.C. A&T employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2‑hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
