Job description

Position Summary

This is an advanced laboratory technician position that will serve as the primary analyst for the Crop Quality section of the UGA Agricultural and Environmental Services Laboratory. Responsibilities include sample preparation (e.g., fruits, vegetables, edible oils, plant tissues, drinking water) and analysis using analytical methods such as high‑pressure liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, UV spectrophotometers, and inductively coupled plasma spectrophotometer while ensuring all quality assurance and quality control criteria are met. The role works with senior laboratory personnel to develop new procedures and support ongoing research projects, communicates with clients about services and the sample submission process, and performs general laboratory duties such as inventory, equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and occasional field sampling support.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field of science and 2 years of professional experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • 40% – Serve as the primary analyst conducting chemical analysis of agricultural and environmental samples for the Crop Quality section following established SOPs and QA/QC protocols, logging samples, preparing solutions, performing extractions, analyzing samples, entering data, generating reports, and troubleshooting equipment.
  • 20% – Prepare manuscripts, proposals, research reports, lab promotional materials, and standard operating procedures; implement the established quality assurance program.
  • 15% – Partner with senior laboratory personnel to provide logistical and technical support for ongoing and future research projects, including occasional field sample collection; harvest fruit and vegetable samples, collect soil and plant tissue samples, and establish and maintain field plots.
  • 10% – Support the daily operation of the laboratory, including purchasing supplies, maintaining equipment, and managing chemical inventories.
  • 10% – Communicate with existing and potential clients about the services offered by the Crop Quality Laboratory and the sample submission process; provide training and supervision to graduate students, temporary employees, and student workers on sample preparation and analysis procedures.
  • 5% – Provide backup support for analysts in other areas of the laboratory in their absence and perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
  • Highly detail‑oriented, organized, and willing to work as part of a team to manage multiple samples, projects, and stakeholders.
  • Strong laboratory background with experience developing and following detailed SOPs and a detailed understanding of laboratory QA/QC practices.
  • Willingness and ability to maintain analytical equipment and troubleshoot issues as they arise during analysis.
  • Basic software knowledge (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and willingness to learn new computer software.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize tasks, and operate independently.
Physical Demands
  • Periodically working in adverse weather conditions during field sampling.
  • Driving as needed to perform job tasks.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
