Job summary

Public Health – Seattle & King County is seeking a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to support mothers in initiating and continuing breastfeeding, using the Loving Support Model. The role involves counseling individuals or groups, addressing barriers, and providing basic information with culturally appropriate approaches.

The position is half-time (approximately 20 hours per week) and performed remotely, with residency in Washington state and occasional in-person responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications

• The candidate must have personally breastfed an infant for at least six months.
• Knowledge of basic breastfeeding methods and management of common problems.
• Ability to maintain client confidentiality and to communicate cross-culturally.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Experience using computers and software commonly used in the position.

Responsibilities

• Promote breastfeeding as the optimal feeding method among WIC participants.
• Provide basic breastfeeding information, encouragement, and rapport with clients.
• Provide individual or group counseling for lactation management per established protocols.
• Refer clients for more intensive assistance when indicated.
• Maintain accurate client records and chart notes.
• Follow agency protocols for referrals and reporting child safety concerns.
