Job summary

Mid-Sioux Opportunity Inc. is seeking a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to support pregnant and breastfeeding WIC participants. The role blends hybrid/remote work with 10-18 hours per week and hourly pay.

You will provide telephone counseling, referrals, and education, maintain client records, and promote breastfeeding. Applicants must have personal breastfeeding experience, be a paraprofessional, and be a current or former WIC participant.

Qualifications

• Have personal breastfeeding experience of at least 6 months.
• Paraprofessional with limited formal training in health, nutrition, or breastfeeding clinic management.
• Current or former breastfeeding WIC participant.

Responsibilities

• Provide basic breastfeeding information, support and encouragement to new mothers.
• Make established periodic contacts with all assigned participants.
• Demonstrate enthusiasm about breastfeeding and help others enjoy a positive experience.
• Be available outside usual clinic hours for calls or texts from breastfeeding mothers.
• Educate mothers on preventing and managing common breastfeeding concerns.
• Educate and counsel pregnant and breastfeeding WIC participants by telephone at scheduled intervals.
• Refer participants to WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert or CPA as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate records of all contacts and complete required reports.
• Promote the breastfeeding peer counselor program through outreach activities.
• Provide breastfeeding support to Spanish-speaking WIC participants.
