Job summary

Aptive, a government-focused technology and services firm, seeks a full-time Technical Writer to support FHWA RD&T at TFHRC. The writer will research, write, and edit technical reports, fact sheets, and user manuals, bridging engineers and varied audiences while adhering to federal publishing standards.

Qualifications

• 5–10 years of professional experience in technical writing, editing, and publishing.
• Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Journalism, or a related field.
• Experience applying the GPO Style Manual and Chicago Manual of Style, and ensuring Section 508 accessibility compliance.
• Experience in the transportation sector or government/research communications preferred.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance.
• Legal authorization to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

• Research, write, and edit content for technical reports, magazines, fact sheets, brochures, and user manuals.
• Collaborate with engineers and subject matter experts to translate complex concepts for technical and general audiences.
• Provide editing and proofreading across all production stages.
• Verify technical accuracy through interviews, research, and fact-checking.
• Ensure content conforms to GPO Style Manual, Chicago Manual of Style, and TFHRC RD&T guide.
• Maintain Section 508 accessibility compliance and manage permissions.
• Manage lifecycle of documents from outline to final publication with version control.
• Coordinate review and approval with FHWA contacts and external stakeholders.
