Job summary

Michigan Medicine seeks a detail-oriented Professional Surgical Coder to translate complex surgical procedures into standardized codes (ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS). You will work with surgeons and billing to ensure accurate documentation and compliant coding practices.

Ideal candidates hold CPC/CCS/RHIT or equivalent certification, with 1–2 years hospital coding experience and strong EHR proficiency. Hybrid or remote-friendly work options are available.

Qualifications

• Certification as CPC/ CCS/ RHIT or equivalent.
• Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding systems.
• Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and surgical procedures.
• Minimum 1–2 years of surgical or anesthesia coding in a hospital setting.
• Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
• Proficient in using EHR and coding software.
• Strong communication and collaboration with healthcare professionals.
• Commitment to patient confidentiality and data security.

Responsibilities

• Accurately code surgical procedures and diagnoses using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
• Review and interpret clinical documentation to ensure appropriate code selection.
• Collaborate with surgeons and medical staff for clarification and completeness of coding information.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines, regulations and best practices.
• Assist in auditing and reviewing patient records for accuracy and compliance.
• Ensure prompt and accurate submission of coded surgical data for billing and reimbursement.
