Job summary

University of Michigan Flint is seeking a detail-oriented Professional Surgical Coder to join our healthcare team. The successful candidate will translate complex surgical procedures into ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes, collaborating with surgeons and billing to ensure precise documentation and compliant billing.

This role requires strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding guidelines, plus 1–2 years in hospital surgical or anesthesia coding, and proficiency with EHR systems

Qualifications

• Certification CPC, CCS, or RHIT or equivalent required.
• Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
• Strong medical terminology, anatomy, and surgical procedure knowledge.
• 1–2 years of surgical or anesthesia coding in a hospital setting.
• Proficient in using electronic health records (EHR) and coding software.
• Excellent attention to detail and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Code surgical procedures and diagnoses accurately using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS.
• Review clinical documentation to ensure correct code selection.
• Collaborate with surgeons and staff for complete coding information.
• Stay up-to-date with coding guidelines and regulations.
• Assist audits and reviews of patient records for compliance.
• Ensure timely submission of coded data for billing and reimbursement.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and data security.
• Participate in ongoing coding education and training.
