Job summary

checkmk-gmbh is seeking a technically hands-on leader to guide a cross-functional software team of 4–6 engineers in a remote-first environment. You will balance day-to-day development with people leadership, coaching, hiring, and shaping a healthy team culture.

You will coach engineers, conduct career conversations, and ensure on-time delivery of high-quality code while staying hands-on with core product work.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on software development experience, primarily in Python.
• Experience leading or managing an engineering team, incl. hiring and on-time delivery of quality code.
• University degree in computer science, engineering, or comparable field.
• Able to stay hands-on with code while driving broader team impact.
• Product-oriented mindset with strong written communication for async, remote work.

Responsibilities

• Guide a small team through technical direction, code reviews, and delivery of high-quality software across core product areas.
• Run regular one-to-ones, structured feedback sessions, and career-development conversations for each engineer.
• Switch between coach, motivator, and sparring-partner roles depending on team needs.
• Hire new team members and align capacity with the engineering manager.
• Strengthen team culture through events, bonding initiatives, and inclusive practices.
