Job summary

PayJunction is seeking a Software Architect to design and build enterprise features and payment integrations our partners rely on, taking open-ended problems from a blank page to production while still writing Java yourself.

The role requires hands-on leadership, end-to-end system design, and a focus on reliability, PCI compliance, and scalable APIs. This position offers flexible work options across the U.S. and a strong total rewards package.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software engineering with ownership of production systems.
• 5+ years of architecture experience as an Architect, Staff, or Principal Engineer across services or teams.
• 5+ years of Java experience, including web frameworks and JVM ecosystem.
• 5+ years mentoring senior and mid-level engineers through code review and design review.
• Production experience with AWS, Linux, MySQL, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and observability tooling.
• Designed and operated a high-availability transactional system with business impact.
• Currently uses AI coding assistants in day-to-day production work.
• BS in Computer Science or equivalent applied experience.
• Preferred: payments/fintech exposure such as card processing or gateways.

Responsibilities

• Lead open-ended initiatives from a blank page to production with Product and Engineering leadership.
• Design the highest-risk systems end-to-end with clear requirements, trade-offs, and failure modes.
• Stay hands-on: write production Java each sprint, review PRs, and enforce a strong test strategy for high-risk paths.
• Mentor senior engineers through design and code reviews and pairing.
• Architect enterprise capabilities like SSO, RBAC, audit trails, and multi-merchant hierarchy.
• Keep core platform processor-agnostic and ensure processor integrations perform optimally.
• Design for reliability and PCI compliance from the start with SLOs and monitoring.
• Advise on AI-assisted development and set security guardrails for AI-generated code.
