Job summary

PayJunction is seeking a Software Architect to design and build the enterprise features and payment integrations our partners rely on to move billions of dollars a year, taking open-ended problems from a blank page to production while still writing Java yourself.

You will lead architecture across services, mentor engineers, define scalable API patterns, and ensure reliability, security, and PCI compliance in a fast-paced fintech environment.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software engineering.
• 5+ years of architecture experience as an Architect/Staff/Principal Engineer.
• 5+ years Java experience, with production Java in the last year.
• 5+ years mentoring senior and mid-level engineers.
• Experience with AWS, Linux, MySQL, CI/CD (Jenkins), and IaC (Puppet).
• Experience with observability tools like Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus.
• Designed and operated high-availability transactional systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead open-ended initiatives from a blank page to production with Product and Engineering leadership.
• Design high-risk systems end to end with clear design docs and tradeoffs.
• Hands-on Java coding each sprint and code review with a strong test strategy.
• Mentor engineers through reviews to grow the team’s design capability.
• Architect enterprise capabilities (SSO, RBAC, audit trails, multi-merchant hierarchy).
• Maintain core platform and integrations for reliable performance and PCI readiness.
• Define SLOs, monitor systems, and lead root-cause analysis to shrink PCI scope.
• Leverage AI-assisted development with security guardrails.
