Job summary

PayJunction is seeking a Software Architect to design and build enterprise features and payment integrations our partners rely on to move billions of dollars a year, taking open-ended problems from a blank page to production while still writing Java yourself.

You will lead open-ended initiatives with Product and Engineering leadership, design high-risk systems end to end, and mentor engineers while maintaining production-grade code with a focus on reliability and PCI compliance.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software engineering.
• 5+ years of architecture experience as an Architect, Staff, or Principal Engineer.
• 5+ years of Java development, including web frameworks and the JVM ecosystem, with recent production Java work.
• 5+ years mentoring senior and mid-level engineers through code review and design review; formal people management not required.
• Experience with AWS, Linux, relational databases (MySQL), CI/CD (Jenkins or comparable), infrastructure as code (Puppet or similar), and observability tooling (Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus).
• Designed and operated a high-availability transactional system with significant business impact.
• Currently using AI coding assistants or agents (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor, or similar) in day-to-day production work.
• BS in Computer Science or equivalent applied experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead open-ended initiatives from a blank page to production with Product and Engineering leadership, breaking the problem down and directing engineers.
• Personally design the highest-risk systems end to end, with clear design docs including requirements, trade-offs, and failure modes.
• Stay hands-on: write production Java every sprint, review pull requests promptly, and enforce a test strategy for high-risk payment paths.
• Mentor senior engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and pairing to grow the team's design capability.
• Architect enterprise capabilities such as SSO, RBAC, audit trails, and multi-merchant hierarchy, plus versioned APIs without breaking changes.
• Keep the core platform processor-agnostic and optimize processor integrations from message mapping through settlements.
• Design for reliability and PCI: define SLOs, monitoring, single points of failure, root-cause analysis, and PCI scope reduction by design.
• Raise delivery velocity with AI-assisted development and implement security guardrails for AI-generated code.
