Job summary

ABB is seeking a Protection & Control Engineer to serve as the technical lead on engineering assignments for utility, industrial, and commercial substations. This full-remote position prefers candidates in Northern California and involves leading design activities, preparing documentation, and coordinating with project teams.

Minimum requirements include a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, 5+ years of protection & control experience, ability to read one-lines and schematics, and a California

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering; Master's Degree preferred.
• 5+ years of experience in protection & control projects for utility customers.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply electrical one-lines, schematics, and instruction manuals.
• Proficient software experience should include Easy Power, SKM Powertools, ETAP, Aspen, and EMTP.
• PE License in California required.
• Candidates must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support engineering design activities for substation protection & control/automation systems, including planning, coordination, and execution of new and retrofit designs.
• Develop engineering documentation and perform analyses—schematics, logic diagrams, layouts, BOMs, reports, and calculations— to support accurate, standards‑compliant designs.
• Manage project materials, construction design packages, and technical issue resolution while providing ongoing communication and status updates to project teams, management, partners, and customers.
• Ensure adherence to safety practices, industry standards, and company/customer requirements while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
