Job summary

The University of Michigan is seeking a full-time Patient Business Associate in the Pre-Service, Revenue Cycle Department to review insurance information and assess financial risk for inpatient admissions and short stays. The role requires ensuring accurate data and smooth processes for patient payments and insurance verification.

Responsibilities include communicating insurance requirements, educating patients on potential out-of-pocket costs, and coordinating with Precertification, Utilization

Qualifications

• High school diploma in combination with 2-3 years' of progressively complex registration, billing & third party payers experience or working with health insurance or in a healthcare setting is essential.
• Outstanding customer service, written and verbal communication skills are mandatory.
• Proficiency in the use of computers and basic software applications is necessary.

Responsibilities

• Acquire accurate and complete insurance information for first-time quality and patient financial experience.
• Verify insurance eligibility and document requirements for preadmissions and admissions.
• Educate patients on out-of-pocket liability prior to service and collect pre-payments.
• Inform patients of insurance requirements and timeframes for newborn deliveries.
• Update patient demographics and insurance information as needed.
• Communicate insurance coverage changes to Precertification, Utilization Review/Care Management and Social Work teams.
• Refer patients with insurance concerns to the Patient Financial Counselor or alternate funding sources.
