Job summary

Michigan Medicine is seeking a Remote Financial Counselor to assist patients, families, and internal customers with hospital and professional billing, insurance concerns, and payment arrangements.

The role requires high school diploma with 3–5 years of medical billing experience and knowledge of payer rules. Training includes Healthy Michigan Plan and Medicaid programs, with opportunities for growth within a large academic health system.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 3–5 years medical billing and/or claims experience in healthcare setting with progressive levels of responsibility.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-9, CPT-4, and CDM codes.
• Knowledge of 3rd party payer rules (Medicare, Medicaid, BCBSM, commercial, MVA).
• Experience with Lean process improvement and clinical business operation systems.

Responsibilities

• Provide exceptional customer service to patients and callers.
• Answer calls and respond to patient inquiries about billing and insurance.
• Read and interpret insurance benefits and explain costs.
• Provide charge and out-of-pocket estimates for procedures.
• Assist patients with applications for health programs and private marketplace plans.
• Create payment plans within guidelines and coordinate with multiple departments.
• Investigate and resolve billing issues with payers and hospital systems.
