Job summary

CommonSpirit Health seeks a Hospital Surgery/Observation Coder to code and abstract outpatient records for data retrieval, reimbursement, and research using the 3M encoder in an EMR environment. You will ensure accuracy and productivity across facilities.

The role requires advanced coding expertise for hospital surgeries/observations, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to perform at high productivity in a fast-paced setting.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• AHIMA credentials (RHIA/RHIT/CCS/CCS-P) or AAPC credential (COC/CIC/CPC-H/CPC); certified within 1 year of hire.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in an acute care setting.
• Competency in outpatient coding guidelines and APC assignment.
• Proficiency in ICD-10 CM, CPT-4, HCPCS and coding modifiers.
• Knowledge of disease management, anatomy & physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, and 3M coding.
• Basic computer applications and email proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Code and abstract outpatient records for data retrieval, reimbursement, and research.
• Code using the 3M encoder; navigate the EMR efficiently.
• Ensure coding meets quality and productivity standards across facilities.
• Abstract information from outpatient records into the designated system and manage follow up.
• Understand coding edits and resolve edits pre/post coding.
• Assign appropriate coding modifiers.
