Job summary

CommonSpirit Health is seeking an experienced Hospital Surgery/Observation Coder to code and abstract outpatient records for data retrieval, reimbursement, and research. You will enter diagnostic and procedure codes using the 3M encoder, navigate the EMR efficiently, and ensure compliance with quality standards across facilities.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Current AHIMA credentials (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P) or AAPC credential (COC, CIC, CPC-H, CPC) required within 1 year of hire.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in an acute care setting.
• Competent outpatient coding guidelines and APC assignment.
• Intermediate to advanced proficiency in ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, HCPCS and modifiers.
• Knowledge of disease management, anatomy & physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology and coding systems (3M).
• Basic knowledge of computer applications and emails.

Responsibilities

• Primary coding consists of Hospital OP Surgeries and/or Observation services.
• Assign codes from current coding systems for surgical and observation accounts and create APC assignments per guidelines and compliance plan.
• Code multiple body systems for surgical procedures or LOS observation services.
• Abstract information from outpatient records into the designated system and use reports/work queues for follow up.
• Understand coding edits and resolve edits pre/post coding.
• Assign appropriate coding modifiers.
