Job summary

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) is seeking a Certification Specialist to perform technical reviews of organic system plans, review inspection reports, and support producers through the certification process.

Responsibilities include conducting inspections, residue sampling as needed, and maintaining audit-ready files while advancing MOFGA’s accreditation. Remote work with travel within ME/NH and parts of MA.

Qualifications

• Education or experience in organic certification or regulatory compliance.
• Knowledge of USDA-NOP standards, especially crop, maple syrup, and processing scopes.
• Working knowledge of organic or sustainable crop and livestock farms, maple syrup, and food processing.
• Excellent written communication abilities and organizational skills.
• Proficiency in computer software, including databases and collaborative platforms.

Responsibilities

• Performs certification activities for clients including technical reviews of organic system plans and communicating results to producers.
• Reviews inspection reports and communicates results to producers.
• Assists applicants by explaining organic standards and the certification process; promotes MOFGA services.
• Pursues adverse actions with clients per policy and in coordination with colleagues.
• Keeps track of clients and ensures auditable files are in good order.
• Conducts annual, investigative or unannounced inspections or residue sampling as time allows.
• Performs product material review with staff and affiliates.
• Investigates complaints to protect organic label integrity.
• Participates in internal audits and USDA accreditation audits.
