Job summary

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) Certification Services seeks a full‑time Certification Specialist to review organic system plans, inspect reports, and communicate outcomes to producers within the service territory. The role emphasizes compliance with USDA organic standards and collaborative work with staff and inspectors.

The position requires travel within MOFGA’s service territory, strong written communication, and the ability to navigate complex regulatory

Qualifications

• Education or experience in organic certification or regulatory compliance, including inspections and auditing.
• Knowledge of USDA-National Organic Program standards, especially for crop, maple syrup, and processing scopes.
• Working knowledge of organic or sustainable crop and livestock farms, maple syrup, and food processing.
• Excellent writing ability and strong organizational skills.
• Proficiency with computer software, databases, and collaborative platforms.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.

Responsibilities

• Performs certification activities for clients including technical reviews of organic system plans and communicating results to producers.
• Reviews inspection reports and communicates results to producers according to policy.
• Assists applicants by explaining standards and the certification process.
• Pursues adverse actions with clients in accordance with policy.
• Keeps track of clients and maintains auditable files.
• Conducts inspections or residue sampling as time allows.
• Participates in internal audits and accreditation processes.
