Job summary

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) is seeking a Certification Specialist to perform technical reviews of organic system plans, review inspection reports, and communicate findings to producers. The role requires knowledge of USDA-NOP standards and experience in organic certification or regulatory compliance.

Travel within MOFGA's service territory is required, with remote work options as described.

Qualifications

• Experience in organic certification or regulatory compliance, including inspections and auditing.
• Knowledge of USDA-NOP standards, especially crop, maple syrup and processing scopes.
• Knowledge of organic or sustainable crop and livestock farming, maple syrup, and processing.
• Strong written communication and excellent organizational skills.
• Proficiency in databases and collaborative platforms.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
• Willingness to travel within MOFGA’s service territory.
• IOIA training and prior organic inspection experience a plus.
• College degree in agriculture or related field a plus.
• Participation in MOFGA’s Common Ground Country Fair as needed.

Responsibilities

• Perform technical reviews of organic system plans and communicate results to producers.
• Review inspection reports and communicate findings to producers.
• Explain organic standards and the certification process to applicants.
• Pursue adverse actions with clients per policy.
• Maintain auditable client files.
• Conduct annual, investigative, and unannounced inspections or residue sampling.
• Material review of products with MCS staff and agency affiliates.
• Investigate complaints to protect the integrity of the organic label.
• Pursue adverse actions, as necessary.
• Participate in internal audits and NOP accreditation audits.
• Carry out other duties to maintain accreditation with USDA.
