Job summary

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) is seeking a Certification Specialist to perform technical reviews of organic system plans, inspect reports, and assist producers through the certification process. This role supports MOFGA Certification Services while traveling within the service territory, including Maine, New Hampshire, and parts of Massachusetts.

Qualifications

• Education or experience in organic certification or regulatory compliance, including inspections and auditing.
• Knowledge of the USDA-NOP standards, especially as it applies to crop, maple syrup, and processing scopes.
• Working knowledge of organic or sustainable crop and livestock farms, maple syrup, and food processing.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, especially in writing.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Proficiency in computer software, including databases and collaborative platforms.
• Strong interpersonal skills that welcome collaboration and constructive feedback.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
• Commitment to MOFGA’s mission and values.
• IOIA training and prior organic inspection experience a plus.
• College degree in agriculture or related field a plus.
• Must be able to travel to attend meetings, training workshops and conferences.
• Participate in MOFGA’s Common Ground Country Fair as needed.

Responsibilities

• Perform technical reviews of organic system plans and communicate results to producers.
• Review inspection reports and communicate outcomes to producers.
• Explain the certification process and encourage use of MOFGA technical services.
• Pursue adverse actions with clients in coordination with colleagues.
• Keep track of clients and maintain auditable files.
• Conduct annual, investigative and unannounced inspections or residue sampling as time allows.
• Perform material review of products with MCS staff and affiliates.
• Investigate complaints to protect the organic label integrity.
• Participate in internal audits and USDA/NOP accreditation audits.
• Carry out MOFGA’s certification program duties to maintain accreditation.
