Job summary

Oportun is seeking a Manager, Loan and Debt Accounting to oversee day-to-day accounting for the loan portfolio and debt, lead the monthly close, reconciliations, and financial analyses. You will develop the team and partner across Finance and Technology.

You will use AI-enabled tools responsibly to enhance analysis, documentation, workflows, and controls while maintaining appropriate review. This role offers a chance to shape scalable accounting practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 6+ years of progressive accounting experience.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and ability to research, interpret, and apply accounting guidance.
• Experience with loan, lending, debt, or other financial-services-related accounting activities.
• Demonstrated experience leading, coaching, and developing accounting professionals and reviewing the work of others.
• Experience with internal controls and accounting process improvements.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate complex accounting issues, identify root causes, and develop practical solutions.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines in a dynamic environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to partner effectively across Finance and other functions.
• Willingness to use AI-enabled tools and emerging technologies responsibly to improve accounting analysis, documentation, and processes while maintaining appropriate review and controls.

Responsibilities

• Oversee accounting activities for loan portfolio and debt, ensuring transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with accounting standards and policies.
• Lead the month-end close process for loan- and debt-related accounts, including journal entries and reconciliations.
• Supervise, coach, and develop accounting team members with clear priorities and feedback.
• Strengthen accounting processes and internal controls by reducing manual work, improving data quality, and streamlining workflows.
• Use AI-enabled tools thoughtfully to enhance accounting analysis, documentation, workflows, and efficiency while maintaining controls.
• Partner with Finance, Technology, and other teams to implement process improvements and scalable accounting practices.
