Job summary

University of Iowa Health Care’s Professional Coding Division seeks a Coding Representative to assign ICD-10-CM and CPT codes for outpatient, professional, and inpatient services. Remote work eligibility is available; training may be onsite or hybrid from the HSSB building.

Annual review of remote work is part of policy. Typical responsibilities include reviewing records, communicating with physicians, ensuring compliant coding, and supporting reporting on documentation and coding trends.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of professional/physician coding rules and guidelines.
• Proficiency in medical terminology.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Detail-oriented with strong time management.
• Ability to handle complex/ambiguous situations with minimal supervision.
• RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CPC-A or equivalent certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Review medical records to assign CPT/HCPCS and ICD-10-CM codes in accordance with policies, guidelines, and regulations.
• Monitor compliance to ensure accurate reimbursement and HIPAA compliance.
• Communicate with physicians and staff for additional information needed for accurate code assignment.
• Meet departmental targets regarding volume and accuracy of codes.
• Adopt initiatives to improve compliance and reduce risks to the institution.
• Assist in providing and analyzing reports related to documentation issues and coding trends.
• Participate in internal coding and development training when needed.
