Job summary

SOLV Energy is seeking a Design Engineer II, Substation with remote work flexibility to own preliminary substation design for utility-scale solar, BESS, and interconnection projects. You will coordinate with BD, estimating, and engineering controls to ensure design viability through 10% deliverables and handoff to Preconstruction teams.

The role requires 3+ years in electrical substation engineering, proficiency in AutoCAD/ETAP, and travel up to 10%.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of 3+ years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar.
• Strong understanding of substation design principles and IEEE, NEC, NESC.
• Ability to travel up to 10%.
• Familiarity with utility interconnection requirements and contract language.

Responsibilities

• Own the first-pass preliminary substation design for pursuits and projects.
• Review client documents and interconnection agreements to identify requirements and risks.
• Serve as primary substation design SME coordinating inputs from multiple teams.
• Lead development of 10% substation design including single-line diagrams and equipment sizing.
• Coordinate with estimating and scheduling to align design and scope.
• Review estimates for technical completeness and identify gaps.
• Deliver owner-reviewed preliminary design to estimating and BD.
• Client engagement: participate in routine client meetings and escalate risk.
• Communicate design decisions clearly to stakeholders.
• Prepare engineering scope, proposals, handoffs to Preconstruction team.
• Support handoff by transferring RFIs, comments, design risks.
• Quality assurance and value engineering: review deliverables and propose alternatives.
• Mentor junior team members.
