Job summary

SOLV Energy is seeking a Design Engineer II, Substation for nationwide utility-scale projects. The role owns preliminary substation design through 10% design, coordinating inputs from engineering teams and external consultants.

This position is fully remote, with location expectations discussed in interview. Applicants must have a Bachelor's in electrical engineering and 3+ years' substation experience, with proficiency in AutoCAD/ETAP, and a strong grip on IEEE/NEC/NESC standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
• Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or equivalent is a nice-to-have, not required.
• Minimum 3+ years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
• Proficiency in electrical design software (AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar).
• Strong understanding of substation design principles, protection schemes, and industry standards (IEEE, NEC, NESC).
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to electrical engineering and solar development.
• Familiarity with utility interconnection requirements and contract language.
• Ability to travel up to 10%.

Responsibilities

• Own the first-pass preliminary substation design approach for assigned pursuits and projects, defining design basis and assumptions.
• Review client documents, interconnection agreements, and standards to identify requirements and risks.
• Serve as primary substation design SME coordinating inputs from engineering consultants, procurement, estimating, and scheduling.
• Lead development of the 10% substation design (single-line diagrams, general arrangements, equipment sizing).
• Coordinate with estimating and scheduling to align design, quantities, and commercial assumptions.
• Review estimates for technical completeness and identify gaps, exclusions, and contingencies.
• Deliver the owner-reviewed preliminary design to estimating and BD per the stage-gate schedule.
• Participate in client meetings to discuss design assumptions and risks.
