Job summary

Newsela is seeking a Learning Experience Designer (LXD), Core, to lead a grade level in designing high-quality ELA instructional materials for secondary students. You will own scope & sequence, and ensure coherence across lessons, texts, and assessments, aligning with CCSS and Newsela’s framework.

You will oversee content from internal and external sources, and guide AI-assisted production while maintaining rigorous pedagogy and accessibility for diverse learners.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience in secondary ELA curriculum development, instructional design, or content creation.
• Strong knowledge of CCSS and state standards for ELA; high school emphasis welcomed.

Responsibilities

• Grade-Level Ownership: lead assigned grade, resolve content/alignment issues across streams.
• Coherence & Consistency: ensure lessons/texts/assessments form a coherent arc aligned to the model.
• Standards Alignment: verify materials align to state ELA standards, ensuring accessibility.
• Scope & Sequence Development: support progression of texts, skills, and standards across units.
• Lesson Development: create teacher- and student-facing lessons that are rigorous and scaffolded.
• Assessment Development: draft rubrics and tasks to measure mastery of standards.
• Scaffolding & Access: build supports to make complex content accessible to all learners.
• Review at Scale: oversee editor/AI-generated content for accuracy and fidelity.
• AI-Supported Production: refine prompts and specs for consistent quality at scale.
• Quality Documentation: contribute to rubrics and conventions for contributors/AI tools.
