Job summary

Nelnet is seeking a Data Engineer to own the data foundation for GenAI solutions in higher education and state/local government engagements. You will design and maintain data pipelines on Google Cloud, ensuring data is structured, classified, and access-controlled for AI use.

The role sits in a hybrid work environment with remote work options. You will collaborate with GCP/Gemini Engineers, ensure data quality, and support governance for FERPA-protected data.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
• Hands-on experience building data pipelines and ELT/ETL processes for analytics or GenAI use cases on a major cloud data platform.
• Strong SQL and Python for pipeline development and data transformation.
• Experience with data governance and classification tooling (e.g., Dataplex, DLP).
• Familiarity with FERPA and education/public sector data compliance.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain data pipelines using BigQuery and Dataflow.
• Ingest, transform, and serve client data for GenAI use cases.
• Define data governance policies and ensure data readiness for AI use cases.
