Job summary
Nelnet is seeking a Data Pipeline Engineer to own the data foundation for GenAI solutions in higher education and SLED. You will design and maintain data pipelines on Google Cloud (BigQuery/Dataflow) to ingest, transform, and serve client data for AI use cases, ensuring strong data governance and compliance with FERPA requirements.
Working within the GenAI delivery team, you will collaborate with the GCP/Gemini Engineer and Forward Deployed Engineer to translate requirements into production
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience building data pipelines and ELT/ETL processes for analytics or GenAI use cases on a major cloud data platform.
- Direct experience with BigQuery and Dataflow (or Cloud Composer/Apache Airflow).
- Experience with data governance and classification tooling (Dataplex, Cloud DLP).
- Strong SQL and Python for pipeline development and data transformation.
- Familiarity with FERPA and education/public sector data privacy considerations.
- Experience partnering with client or partner tech teams to pull data from legacy systems.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain data pipelines using BigQuery and Dataflow.
- Ingest, transform, and serve client data for GenAI use cases.
- Monitor pipeline reliability, performance, and cost; optimize BigQuery usage.
- Define and enforce data access controls and governance policies.
- Collaborate with GCP/Gemini and AgentOps teams on data structures and security.
- Document data flows, schemas, and classification decisions for audits.
