Job summary

Salas O’Brien seeks an experienced Forensic Mechanical Engineer in the Detroit area. The role supports investigations of HVAC, MEP, BAS/BMS, and fire systems from a remote home office, with travel as needed. Requirements include a MI P.E. or reciprocity, and at least 5 years in forensic engineering within diverse settings.

The candidate should demonstrate strong technical writing and verbal communication, customer service orientation, and the ability to work independently on complex projects.

Qualifications

• Licensed P.E. in MI or eligible by reciprocity and able to obtain licensure.
• 5–10 years designing/working with mechanical equipment and HVAC/MEP systems.
• At least 5 years of forensic engineering experience preferred.
• Ability to work independently and with cross‑functional teams.
• Strong technical writing and reporting abilities.

Responsibilities

• Investigate root cause and extent of failures in HVAC, MEP, BMS/BAS, and fire protection systems.
• Assess other types of mechanical failures and provide defensible conclusions.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to deliver client-focused results.
• Prepare clear, professional reports and communicate findings to clients.
