Job summary

Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced Financial Controller to join our Finance & Operations team from a home-office in the United States. The Controller will lead the accounting function end-to-end, overseeing financial data, GAAP reporting, and grant accounting to support real-time decision-making.

Working with the Finance & Operations Director and outsourced accounting partner, you will build and maintain the financial infrastructure, manage restricted grants, and drive improvements

Qualifications

• 8+ years of progressive finance experience, including nonprofit accounting.
• CPA, CMA, MBA/MPA, or equivalent experience in nonprofit financial management.
• Experience managing complex finances across multiple restricted grants.
• Experience with QuickBooks and GAAP reporting.
• Strong Excel skills and data analysis ability.
• Experience transitioning from startup/manual systems to robust nonprofit accounting systems.

Responsibilities

• Own the monthly close process in partnership with GEM’s outsourced accountant.
• GL oversight: review journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements for accuracy.
• Ensure timely and accurate reporting in accordance with nonprofit GAAP.
• Update accounting structure to reflect organizational changes over time.
• Lead audit preparation and serve as primary internal contact for auditors.
• Support scalable systems and cross-functional use of financial data.
