Job summary

ITW in Vermont is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to design, develop, test, and support embedded software for existing and new products, including hardware bring-up and MCU-based systems. You will work closely with hardware and firmware teams to deliver robust, maintainable solutions.

This role combines hands-on engineering with cross-functional collaboration, problem solving, and software leadership across the product lifecycle.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering required.
• 4+ years embedded software experience.
• Proficiency in C/C++ and Git.
• Experience with FreeRTOS or MQX.
• Strong hardware/software integration skills.
• Ability to work independently across design, coding, testing, debugging, implementation, and documentation phases.
• Analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Experience supporting manufacturing or customer applications is a plus.
• Experience with board bring-up and debugging prototype hardware.
• Ability to read schematics and datasheets.
• Experience with JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers.

Responsibilities

• Develop, code, test, and debug embedded software for customers and internal product lines.
• Design and modify moderately complex software from specifications.
• Apply design theories and engineering principles to create robust embedded solutions.
• Modify existing software to meet customer configurations.
• Validate software versions for proper hardware integration.
• Bring up embedded software on new hardware platforms.
• Develop and debug drivers and board support software for UART, SPI, I2C, USB, Ethernet, GPIO.
• Provide technical input to schedules and estimates.
• Coordinate activities with cross-functional teams and communicate status and risks.
• Document designs and analyses professionally.
• Test, reliability, and verification planning.
• Interpret test results into engineering decisions.
• Develop bring-up and regression test plans for hardware/firmware.
• Diagnose startup, memory, and hardware/software interaction issues.
• Support cross-functional and customer issues.
• Drive product development from concept through manufacturing release.
• Collaborate with electrical engineering during schematic reviews.
