Job summary

Actalent is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to design and develop firmware for water instrumentation. You will work across hardware and software, contributing to embedded Linux/RTOS and bare-metal platforms in a fully remote contract-to-hire role.

Expect agile collaboration, strong debugging, and CI/CD integration from day one. Responsibilities include driver/kernel work, hardware integration, and developing robust firmware with cross-functional teams in a campus-like engineering

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field.
• 3–5+ years in C++ in embedded environments with Linux/RTOS/bare-metal.
• Experience with 32-bit MCUs and embedded platforms including Linux.
• Strong understanding of architecture, memory tech, and builds.
• Agile methodologies and Scrum experience.
• Device driver/kernel programming for embedded Linux.
• Ability to read schematics and low-level hardware interfaces.
• Familiarity with I2C, SPI, UART, MODBUS, USB, Ethernet.
• Proficient in debugging with oscilloscope, logic analyzers, DMM.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop embedded firmware for water instrumentation on microcontrollers, Linux, RTOS and bare-metal platforms.
• Collaborate in an Agile team, participate in scrums and planning.
• Analyze requirements, estimate effort, deliver high-impact firmware features.
• Integrate firmware with hardware, read schematics, understand instrumentation architecture.
• Troubleshoot complex issues with scopes, analyzers, and DMMs; ensure robust HW-SW interaction.
• Modify and extend code bases to meet new needs and improve performance.
• Implement CI/CD practices including automated builds and unit tests.
• Produce technical design docs and contribute to architecture discussions.
• Develop device drivers and kernel components for embedded Linux; low-level hardware interaction.
• Support communication protocols: I2C, SPI, UART, MODBUS, USB, Ethernet.
• Ensure code quality through testing, debugging, and reviews; hands-on development lifecycle.
