Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking an experienced electrical automation engineer to support the Electric Power Division in Texas. The role focuses on designing, programming, testing, and commissioning generator control switchgear systems, and retrofitting existing installations.

You will collaborate with dealers, factory teams, and CAD designers, handling documentation, risk assessments, and customer training. A BSEE/BSEET is preferred, with 35-50% travel, and a salaried exempt position with overtime

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET) preferred, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Experience with automation and controls, including PLC-based systems, HMIs, and distributed control systems.
• Strong knowledge of power systems, switchgear, ATS, and generator systems.

Responsibilities

• Identify retrofit opportunities, define project scope, and support proposal development with Dealer and Factory teams.
• Execute design, programming, testing, and commissioning of low- and medium-voltage generator paralleling control systems.
• Convert legacy PLC programs to current platforms and validate performance.
• Develop and modify PLC and HMI applications using standard templates.
• Partner with CAD designers to produce wiring and assembly drawings.
• Perform technical risk assessment and support field performance of assigned projects.
• Submit project documentation, reports, and expenses in a timely manner.
• Train and support technicians, customers, and internal teams on maintenance, troubleshooting, and system operation as needed.
