Job summary

The Hanover Insurance Group is seeking an Underwriting Specialist Specialty – Merit Specialty (Wholesale) to transact business with wholesale partners and underwrite new and renewal Specialty accounts that drive profitable growth. The role requires sales acumen, strategic thinking, and strong collaboration to align with appetite and mix goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
• Generally, 3-7+ years Specialty or standard commercial lines experience.
• 3-4+ years’ experience driving agency relationships resulting in profitable new and renewal business.

Responsibilities

• Technical Underwriting: apply underwriting concepts, use appropriate tools, understand pricing components, ask key risk questions, document files clearly, provide rating instructions.
• Portfolio Management & Financial Acumen: manage portfolio for growth and profitability, read financial reporting, understand market factors affecting pricing.
• Sales Management: identify, solicit, pipeline, negotiate and close accounts, build agency relationships, stay updated on regulations, leverage cross-unit collaboration.
