Job summary

GAF is seeking a Director of Environmental Compliance to lead corporate environmental programs, oversee permitting and remediation, and ensure regulatory compliance across locations. This role reports to the VP of Environmental, Health, and Safety and manages EHS professionals.

The candidate will drive strategy, supervise external counsel, coordinate with operations, and advance programs for air emissions, wastewater, SPCC, and sustainability. Remote US-based position.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering is required.
• 15+ years environmental management experience, 10+ years management of people and engineering.
• Problem-solving using standard engineering / scientific methods.
• Ability to effectively adapt to changing needs and priorities while maintaining a positive attitude with a focus on client success.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills that are leveraged to build relationships and trust with internal and external stakeholders.
• Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Must have excellent organizational, written and oral communication, listening and presentation skills including the ability to effectively present and discuss technical information and respond to questions from employees, government agency representatives, and customers.
• Ability to motivate teams and simultaneously manage multiple projects.
• Intermediate knowledge of Google Suite Office.

Responsibilities

• Define and Execute Strategy: Establish a visionary future-state for environmental excellence and develop a multi-phased strategy.
• Program Oversight and Governance: Lead all corporate environmental initiatives and manage vendors/external counsel.
• Technical Leadership: Provide guidance to implement core compliance and sustainability programs.
• Regulatory Interpretation: Maintain deep expertise in Federal and state environmental regulations.
• Cross-Functional System Implementation: Collaborate with partners to meet regulatory expectations.
• Technology Evaluation: Evaluate air pollution control technologies for improvements.
• Permitting and Reporting Expertise: Prepare permit applications and regulatory reporting.
• Operational Integration: Serve as the environmental resource for compliance across plants.
• Proactive Trend Analysis: Monitor emerging regulations and plan readiness.
• Talent Development: Coach and develop EHS staff.
• M&A Due Diligence: Support environmental due diligence for acquisitions.
• Expert Liaison: Liaise with internal/external counsel and SMEs on projects.
