Job summary

Southern New Hampshire University seeks a Data Security Engineer to protect institutional data across the enterprise, including Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, and Azure SQL. This hands‑on role emphasizes encryption, access control, masking, and secure data pipelines, reporting to the Deputy CISO.

You will collaborate with Security Operations, Data & Analytics, Data Governance, and IT teams to support secure data solutions, threat modeling, and runbooks.

Responsibilities

• Implements and maintains data protection controls across the enterprise data estate, including labeling, masking, and de‑identification to meet regulatory requirements.
• Configures and operates encryption controls for data at rest and in transit, including CMKs and key rotation, with vaulting services.
• Enforces least‑privilege access models across data platforms and conducts entitlement reviews to remove excessive access.
• Harden security configurations for Fabric, Databricks, Azure SQL, SQL Server, data lakes, and storage services; assess permissions and audit settings for weaknesses.
• Secures data ingestion, transformation, and export workflows; ensures service identities, connectors, and CI/CD pipelines are protected.
• Protects non‑production environments with synthetic data and approved masking standards before data leaves production.
• Automates control deployment, configuration assessment, and compliance validation via scripting and IaC; integrates telemetry with Security Operations.
• Documents implementations, runbooks, and standards; participates in threat modeling and secure design reviews.
• Attendance and reliability are essential; other duties may be assigned.
