Job summary

Aperture Group is seeking a Controls Commissioning Engineer to support startup, testing, and commissioning of automated material handling and warehouse automation systems at customer sites across North America. This remote, home-based role offers substantial travel and hands-on problem solving with a multidisciplinary team.

The engineer will configure PLCs/HMIs/VFDs, validate field wiring, perform I/O checks, and ensure system go-live readiness across projects in North America.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field; equivalent hands-on experience will be considered.
• 1+ years of experience commissioning industrial automation, controls, or material handling systems.
• Experience with PLC platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar.
• Familiarity with industrial networking and communication protocols.
• Ability to read electrical schematics, control panel layouts, and wiring diagrams.
• Willingness to travel up to 75% throughout North America.

Responsibilities

• Commission automated material handling systems, including conveyors, sortation systems, merges, and related equipment.
• Perform I/O checkout, safety verification, field wiring validation, and device commissioning.
• Configure, test, and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and industrial communication networks (EtherNet/IP, OPC UA, MQTT, IO-Link, etc.).
• Verify system performance against design specifications and functional requirements.
• Partner with controls, mechanical, electrical, software, and project engineering teams to identify and resolve technical issues.
• Support system integration testing, performance testing, throughput validation, and customer acceptance testing.
• Document commissioning activities, punch list items, system modifications, and test results.
• Train customer operations and maintenance personnel on system operation and maintenance best practices.
• Provide on-site support during startup and go-live activities.
