Job summary

The Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) in Delaware is seeking a Child Support Specialist I to establish and enforce child support orders while delivering high-quality customer service.

You will work with the Delaware Justice Department, Family Court, and other agencies, handling cases through research, documentation, and Delaware Child Support System, and interact with clients in person, by phone, email, or in court.

Qualifications

• Associates degree or higher in Behavioral or Social Science or related field.
• Six months experience in case management with assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
• Six months experience in interviewing clients and families to obtain facts and explore issues.
• Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
• Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter/update/report data.
• Six months experience in narrative report writing.
• Knowledge of math including basic operations and percentages/decimals.

Responsibilities

• Interview obligees and assess needs to determine appropriate actions and update case records.
• Access multiple databases to gather information for processing, establishment and enforcement of child support cases.
• Research case records to prepare petitions, motions, wage attachments, and legal documents.
• Respond to inquiries from obligees/obligors, employers, agencies, and officials; document inquiries in a system.
• Refer clients to public/private agencies for appropriate services.
• Maintain records and reports and share information with other agencies.
• Interview clients to elicit sensitive information from diverse backgrounds.
• Provide outreach/education by collaborating with public/private organizations, schools, and facilities.
• Recognize crisis situations and apply procedures to defuse them.
