Job summary

NAMI Chicago is seeking a 988 Lifeline Crisis Counselor to operate remotely within the Chicago area. You will respond to calls, chats and texts, provide crisis intervention, and connect callers with resources while adhering to 988 Lifeline policies.

The role requires confidential record-keeping and multitasking across platforms, with in-person trainings at the Chicago office as requested. A bachelor’s degree in social work or related field is required; experience with homelessness or behavioral

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling or related field.
• Minimum 1–5 years in counseling, crisis, or case management with vulnerable populations.
• Experience with telephonic outreach and using community resources.

Responsibilities

• Provide crisis intervention via calls, chats, and texts on the 988 Lifeline, following policy standards.
• Active listening to understand emotions, concerns and needs.
• Assess safety and risk using established protocols; assist at imminent risk scenarios.
• Develop safety plans and connect to resources; collaborate with teams for support.
• Document interactions in confidential records; ensure privacy and HIPAA compliance.
• Coordinate with clinicians, law enforcement and EMS when needed.
