Job summary

NAMI Chicago is seeking a Part-Time 988 Lifeline Crisis Counselor to provide immediate support and crisis intervention to individuals in emotional distress through calls, chats, and texts.

The role is work-from-home within the Chicago area, with in-person trainings and meetings at the Chicago office as requested. Shifts include overnight, evening, and day, requiring empathy, strong communication, calm decision-making, and meticulous documentation in the client record system.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling or related field is required.
• Master’s degree is preferred.
• Minimum 1–5 years of relevant counseling/crisis experience.
• Experience with telephonic outreach, crisis, or case management.
• Familiar with Chicagoland resources and HIPAA/privacy regulations.
• Typing speed 35–40 WPM and strong computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide crisis intervention for calls, chats, and texts on the 988 Lifeline.
• Practice empathetic listening and assess safety and risk.
• De-escalate crises and develop safety plans with contacts.
• Refer to appropriate mental health services using vetted resources.
• Document interactions accurately in the client record system.
• Coordinate with other professionals to ensure comprehensive support.
