Job summary

Craig Hospital seeks a Rehabilitation Engineer II to design, develop, modify, and apply rehabilitative and assistive technology. You will work with clinicians to improve mobility, independence, comfort and safety through custom devices and software solutions.

The role involves hands-on hardware and firmware work, including power distribution, motor control, and embedded software in C/C++/OOP. Strong teamwork and clinical collaboration are essential.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in electrical or software engineering or closely related field is required.
  • 3-5 years experience with adaptive equipment; TBI/SCI experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design modifications to assistive technology equipment and develop specification packages.
  • Provide assistive technology consultation and assessment to patients and family members.
  • Develop written assistive technology plan including costs, timing and training.
  • Physically modify, assemble and install equipment; demonstrate to patient and adjust as needed.
  • Follow-up with patient/therapist and track costs/time.
  • Diagnose problems using fault-finding techniques and document repair status.
  • Design and test software/firmware for embedded devices and PC applications.
  • Collaborate with vendors to upgrade equipment and solve issues.

Position Summary

In conjunction with all clinical departments and physicians, the Rehabilitation Engineer II is involved with the design, development, modification and application of rehabilitative and assistive technology to assist patients in achieving greater independence. This position may be involved as a team member or independently in addressing problems related to wheelchairs and mobility, corrective postural positioning, independent living, workplace modification, adaptive driving and assistive technology for both personal and therapeutic environments/use. This position's main focus is to help increase the patient's function, comfort, safety and overall independence.

Location: 3425 S Clarkson St, Englewood, CO 80113

Shift: Days; M-F 8 am-4:30 pm MST

Compensation: $38.77/ hour - $55.84/ hour; exempt.

Position Requirements
  • Licensure/Certification/Registrations: None
  • Education: Master's degree in electrical or software engineering or closely related engineering field required.
  • Experience: 3-5 years experience with adaptive equipment required, TBI and SCI experience preferred.
  • Skills & Abilities: Possess strong interpersonal skills in order to build effective clinical leadership. Ability to conduct themselves in a diplomatic and tactful manner with professionals and non-professionals at all levels. Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate, problem solve, and adapt to a changing environment with competence. Possess a dedication to teamwork and commitment to excellence. Strong attention to detail. Proficient with Solidworks CAD. Strong experience with soldering, PCB manufacture and debugging experience. Extensive experience to power supply design, control box and power distribution design, as well as control system and controller design. Demonstrated creativity in the use of hardware, software, and mechanics. Experience with digital and analog electronics design principles and techniques (Microprocessor/microcontroller, ADC, DAC, analog filters, etc.). Experience in the design and development of embedded software in C/C++/OOP, with additional experience in the following a large plus: C#, RTOS, Python, Doxygen, CrossWorks. Experience with 16/32-bit uC systems and with embedded real-time operating systems. Experience with motor control (experience with BLDC a plus). Familiar with lab testing and debugging tools.
Essential Functions
  • Design modifications to assistive technology equipment and design custom assistive technology equipment. Develop specification packages, guidelines, and standards for provision of assistive technology services. Provide fitting and initial training on custom assistive technology equipment, modified commercial assistive technology equipment, and commercial assistive technology equipment, as necessary.
  • Provide assistive technology consultation and assessment to patients and family members. Consult with patients, family members and therapists to identify potential need for assistive technology. Manufacture and/or construct prototype solutions in response to the patient review or assessment.
  • Develop written assistive technology plan. Provide effective alternate solutions with associated benefits and details including sources of equipment and services, approximate costs, approximate timing for implementation, a maintenance plan, training plan and follow-up plan. Provide appropriate justification for assistive technology expenditures to patient counselor for funding purposes.
  • Physically modify, assemble and install equipment ensuring that manufacturer's instructions, documentation, testing, inspection and quality are carried out where needed. Assemble and demonstrate the equipment to the patient, confirm suitability and effectiveness and that any necessary adjustments are made to fine tune the equipment to the patient.
  • Follow-up with patient or therapist to ensure established expectations are met. Track costs and time associated with specific activities in accordance with established reporting requirements.
  • Determine independently which diagnostic/maintenance/repair checks need to be carried out based applying suitable fault finding techniques to diagnose problems including those beyond the scope of the manufacturers supplied technical documentation. Complete repair documentation to indicate status of equipment, as well as identification of components parts used in maintaining the equipment.
  • Evaluate electrical systems, products, components, and applications by designing and conducting research programs; apply knowledge of electricity and materials.
  • Work independently and participate within the team to establish system architectures, select platforms, design and implement software for a wide range of real-time embedded devices and systems.
  • Design, develop, document, test and debug device drivers, associated application level firmware, as well as PC application software.
  • Act as liaison to vendors and manufactures of technology and equipment to upgrade or problem solve equipment issues as they may arise.
