Position Summary

Provide quality obstetric, neonatal, and gynecologic nursing care in a holistic environment, incorporating emotional support and education alongside medical and nursing care to promote patient well-being.


Position Requirements

Formal Education / Training:

  • Licensed by the State of Tennessee
  • Nursing diploma or degree from an accredited institution
  • BLS within 90 days of hire
  • At least one year of perinatal experience preferred
  • Certified Lactation Consultant preferred
  • NRP within six months of hire
  • ACLS certification or agreement to obtain within six months of hire
  • Level I, II, and fetal monitoring certification within 1 year of hire, including:
    • Care of the Obstetric Patient - Level I
    • Care of the High Risk Obstetric Patient - Level II
    • Advanced Fetal Monitoring or AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring

Able to function under stress and return to work within 1 hour when on call.

Workplace Experience:

Perinatal healthcare delivery

Equipment and Skills:

Proficiency with standard patient care equipment, ability to work under pressure, and flexibility in applying nursing knowledge across settings. Equipment includes network systems, neonatal monitors, fetal monitors, intrauterine pressure catheters, phototherapy lights, infant ventilators, NICU equipment, Doppler, and medication systems.

Physical Environment:

Perinatal/OB-GYN unit serving patients from less than one year to ninety-nine years old.

Physical Effort:

Ability to communicate in English, stand for long hours, and lift up to 250 lbs with assistance.

Performance Standards
  1. Perform comprehensive assessments on all patients within an appropriate timeframe, utilizing observation, communication, and examination skills.
  2. Develop individualized care plans, identifying problems, nursing diagnoses, standards, interventions, and outcomes.
  3. Plan patient teaching, discharge, and post-discharge needs.
  4. Operate treatments, procedures, and equipment independently, adhering to policies and competencies.
  5. Administer medications safely following hospital protocols.
  6. Document care accurately and promptly.
  7. Reassess patient conditions, evaluate responses, and modify care plans as needed.
  8. Accept charge responsibilities, assign staff considering patient needs, and facilitate staff development.
  9. Maintain a healing environment for patients and families.
  10. Maintain position-specific qualifications and attend mandatory training.
  11. Handle communications, unit duties, and assignments responsibly.
  12. Maintain professional appearance, reflecting cleanliness, orderliness, and safety.
