Position Summary

To provide quality obstetric, neonatal, and gynecologic nursing care in an environment that meets patient needs holistically, incorporating emotional support and education alongside medical and nursing care to promote patient well-being.

Position Requirements

Formal Education / Training:

  • Licensed by the State of Tennessee.
  • Diploma or degree in nursing from an accredited college or university.
  • BLS certification within 90 days of hire.
  • At least one year of perinatal experience preferred.
  • Certified Lactation Consultant preferred.
  • NRP certification within six months of hire.
  • ACLS certification or willingness to obtain within six months.
  • Level I, II, and fetal monitoring certification within 1 year, including:
  • Care of the Obstetric Patient - Level I
  • Care of the High-Risk Obstetric Patient - Level II
  • Advanced Fetal Monitoring or AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring

Must be able to function under stress and return to work within 1 hour when on call.

Workplace Experience:

Perinatal Healthcare Delivery

Equipment and Skills Training:

Proficiency with standard patient care equipment and ability to work under pressure, independently and dependently, applying nursing knowledge flexibly. Equipment includes network systems, neonatal monitors, fetal monitors, intrauterine pressure catheters, phototherapy lights, infant ventilators, and more.

Physical Environment:

Perinatal/OB-GYN unit serving patients from less than one year to ninety-nine years old.

Physical Effort:

Ability to communicate in English, stand for up to 12 hours, and lift up to 250 lbs with assistance.

Performance Standards
  1. Conduct comprehensive assessments upon patient admission, utilizing observation, communication, and examination skills.
  2. Develop individualized care plans addressing problems, nursing diagnoses, and outcomes.
  3. Plan patient education, discharge, and post-discharge needs.
  4. Perform treatments and procedures independently following policies and assessments.
  5. Administer medications safely per hospital policies.
  6. Document accurately and promptly.
  7. Reassess and modify care plans based on patient response.
  8. Accept charge responsibilities, assign staff appropriately, and foster staff development.
  9. Create a healing and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
  10. Maintain qualifications and attend mandatory training and meetings.
  11. Communicate effectively and fulfill unit duties and special assignments.
  12. Maintain professional appearance reflecting cleanliness, order, and safety.
