Position Summary

Provide quality obstetric, neonatal, and gynecologic nursing care in a holistic environment, incorporating emotional support and education alongside medical and nursing care to promote patient well-being.

Position Requirements

Formal Education / Training:

  • Licensed by the State of Tennessee
  • Nursing diploma or degree from an accredited institution
  • BLS within 90 days of hire
  • Preferred: at least one year of perinatal experience, Certified Lactation Consultant
  • NRP within six months of hire
  • ACLS certification or willingness to obtain within six months
  • Level I, II, and fetal monitoring certification within one year

Skills include functioning well under stress, quick return to work when on call, and competence in caring for obstetric patients at various levels of care, including high-risk situations with fetal monitoring expertise.

Workplace Experience:

Perinatal healthcare delivery

Equipment and Skills Training:

Proficiency with standard patient care equipment and ability to work dependently and independently in various settings. Equipment includes neonatal monitors, fetal monitors, intrauterine pressure catheters, phototherapy lights, infant ventilators, and more.

Physical Environment:

Perinatal/OB-GYN unit caring for patients from less than one year to ninety-nine years old.

Physical Effort:

Ability to communicate effectively in English, stand for up to twelve hours, and lift up to 250 lbs with assistance.

Performance Standards

  1. Perform comprehensive assessments within appropriate timeframes using observation, communication, and examination skills.
  2. Develop individualized care plans based on identified problems, diagnoses, and standards of care.
  3. Plan patient teaching, discharge, and post-discharge care.
  4. Perform treatments, procedures, and use equipment independently, adhering to policies and competencies.
  5. Administer medications safely and accurately.
  6. Document care accurately and promptly.
  7. Reassess and modify care plans based on patient response.
  8. Accept charge responsibilities, delegate appropriately, and foster staff development.
  9. Maintain a healing environment for patients and families.
  10. Maintain current qualifications and attend mandatory training.
  11. Ensure effective communication and fulfill unit duties and special assignments.
  12. Present a professional appearance reflecting safety and cleanliness standards.
